I know there's already been a lot of discussion on LJ about critical reviewing.
I've always been firmly in the camp that a critical review can be a great writers tool. I welcome critical reviews (not that I write a lot, but more on that later) and when I get critical, I try very hard to give tips and explain what didn't really work, without being mean (even if sometimes I just want to bash my head through the computer screen to put me out of my misery).

I do write fanfiction, but I lack self discipline and oh yeah, talent, so I rarely post. (I'm not just being charmingly self deprecating here. I read a LOT of fic and there are plenty of writers out there, I couldn't touch with a ten feet pole, if I was standing on a spring cushion. On the other hand there are plenty of writers out there I could write into the ground... but so could my cremated dog if I dropped his ashes on my keyboard).
I sometimes wonder if I even have the right to be critical when I find my own skills lacking, but damn it! I may not consider myself a particularly good writer, but I know I'm a good reader! It's rare that I miss plot twists. I can read between the lines. And I can tell when something just doesn't work.
I may not spend months slaving over a piece, but I read a ridiculous amount! In my current fandom of choice, I'm sometimes hard pressed to find quality fiction I haven't read yet. I'm one of those people who hangs out at the rec journals and archives, scrolling back all, "Read it, read it, heh, that one was cool."
So power to the readers! It's our fandom to!
(incidentally do other people also find it easier to be critical at the pit of voles, then on LJ? Maybe it just seems that way because the quality there tends to be... well, anyone into fanfic knows what I mean. Or maybe it's because you can't really start a conversation with the author, so you have put all your points in one post... Somehow I just tend to assume an LJ user equals an adult who's serious about their writing. Must think on that)
