I'm in the running for a six month volunteering gig in Peru or Guatemala. I'll hear by the end of the week either way. At this point I honestly don't know what's scarier. Being rejected or actually having to go!

Missed the train last night, so I got to spend a wonderful half hour hanging around central station, sipping cocoa and gawking at everybody. 
High light: The old guy in the air force officer jacket, playing with a JOJO. Jack O'Neill lives! 

People are fun.

what kind of volunteering gig is it? And do you have a preference for Peru or Guatamala? I haven't been to either country,so I can't offer any advise except: Don't join FARC (yeah I know that is in Colombia and not in Peru or Guatamala, but it's the only thing I could think of)

Missing the train, I did that last sunday. Got to spend 25 minutes at Utrecht CS. I didn't have the nice view you had though :(, but I did have my laptop with me, so the wait wasn't that bad.

Its hard to say. I'd rather go to Peru, since I'll be staying in the archeological capital of South America (excuse me while I drool over that option for a bit), but the project in Guatemala sounds nice too. I'd be living with a lot of international students there so that would be fun.

Both gigs are mostly teaching english and stuff. Peru involves a childrens home.

My sister was actually friends with the girl that joined FARQ. Maybe she can put in a good word for me... should I feel the need to escape the kids ;).

I'm sorry you didn't have quite as good a time at Utrecht. Maybe we could convince NS to hire O'Neill wannabe's for our waiting pleasure.

Maybe you could threaten the kids with your FARC connection should they be annoying. You could say. Be nice or else my sisters friend who is in the FARC will come and get you *g*

I also totally agree with your NS suggestion. People would bitch a lot less about trains being late if they had nice scenery like that to look at. Of course they could also take down all the ad-billboards and replace them all with giant posters of Rodney. *g*

OMGYEEES! It would totally make up for the ticket prizes too!

As for the kids. During my interview I was asked what I'd do if I saw one of the kids get beaten... I think this implied that my FARC connections might be the least of their worries... yikes.

Yep, it totally would. Of course I'd never be able to leave the station, or I'd have to 'borrow' the posters and take them home with me *g*

wow, hard questions at the interview. I don't think I was asked that during my interview for camp counselor in the US. bit maybe they did. The interview was ages ago and I don't remember much of it.

They wanted to test how I'd handle cultural differences. But yeah, tough questions and I'm still not entirely sure what the answer to that one was supposed to be.

Did you get the US gig? Sounds like fun.

Yep, I got the US gig. 1 summer at Camp Timber Trails.
It was a lot of fun :)
